My name is Noah Nelson and I am from the small town of Taylorville, located smack dab in the middle of Illinois. Currently, I am a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in journalism with minors in political science and history. Outside of the classroom, I serve as a senior columnist for the school’s student newspaper The Daily Illini, a member of Block I and Orange Krush, the football and basketball fan clubs respectively, Star Course Concert Committee, Champaign Chapter of Society of Professional Journalists and a writer on Medium.com.
I discovered Medium less than…
The other day, I dropped some books off at my local Little Free Library book box. I then searched through it to find a small book by Anna Quindlen called “A Short Guide to a Happy Life.” Better yet, the small book was signed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
When I finally found the time to dig deep into this marvelous book, I began to look at life from a different perspective.
As Quindlen write in this 50-page book: “Life is made of moments, small pieces of silver amidst long stretches of tedium. It would be wonderful if they came…
You know who President John Tyler is, right? You should know he spent some time in the White House, and that even though he died in 1862 in the early days of the American Civil War, he still has one grandchild living today.
How is that even possible?
It’s strange, but true. During his 71-year life, Tyler fathered 15 children, more than any other U.S. president. He had eight children with his first wife, Letitia Christian. In 1844, he married Julia Gardiner, with whom he had another seven children. All of his grandchildren should be dead by now, right?
They tell you to love others
Care for them just the same
But you yourself are also part of this life
They call a game
Sure, you love others
But you should love yourself too
Don’t be so conceited
Whatever you do
But seriously do it
Be proud of who you are
You’re just another one of the world’s shining stars
Pat yourself on the back a time or two
And congratulate on a job well done
Loving yourself is half the fun
Love yourself like others too
It’ll be an easy thing to do
I know I can do it
We all want something in this life
Whatever it may be
But what we really should have
Is right in front of you and me
Are we so blinded?
That we cannot see?
Are we missing a sign?
To be what we can be?
It’s all right there
Clear as day
There certainly is no other way
Why spend time chasing an end so dead
When we should just be looking straight ahead
Are you ready for the journey?
To be all we can be?
It’s happening right in front of you and me

Yesterday morning, I received a shocking yet satisfying email. Medium told me I am now a top writer in music!
Recently, I’ve been writing tons of articles about music, some of which are included here:
Taylor Swift is a musical genius.
For the past two decades, she has given the world timeless music. Some of it is great; some not so much as the others. Nevertheless, it’s still difficult to rank her album.
Here is my personal ranking of them:
Man, I wish I would’ve attended a show on this tour. The album is filled with great hits that I get grow tired of listening to again and again.
I still party to “22.” I still cry at “All Too Well.” And I still belt out every other song on the album. It’s one of…
I hit yet another Medium milestone yesterday. I published my 300th article! The cool part about it?
I didn’t even realize I did.
Nowadays, I’ve been writing up a storm. Maybe it’s because summer allows me more time to write or because I have tons of ideas, but I just can’t stop writing.
For the past four months, medium has become a part of me. It’s allowed to grow as a writer, meet other writers and earn a little money. Im other words, I’m achieving what I set out to do when I began.
Writing 300 articles so far is…
To my future children
I can’t wait to be your dad someday
I can’t wait to hold you in my arms
And tell you everything will be okay
To my future children
I can’t wait to see you grow
I can’t wait to watch you become
The greatest people I’ll ever know
Sure, you’ll make mistakes
You’ll fall flat on your face
But I know if you keep going
You’re going to win the race
You contribute to society
And be the best you can be
I can’t wait for you to travel the world
See all there is to…
I’ve been a serious writer for nine years. That’s not too long, but considering I’m only 21, it’s a great chunk of my life.
During that time, the years have intertwined with one another, but I have written for following publications:
It’s been a heck of journey so far…
