Mystery stories are a great form of escape, to let your mind follow the detective to see who done it. They are roller coaster rides of entertainment.

If you think reading a mystery story is fun, try writing one. It’s even better.

Here are 21 prompts to help you get started:

1. When a woman attempts to dig up a grave, a cell phone rings from the ground.

2. A scientist dies on the day he wins the Nobel Prize.

3. Three children find a dead body in the schoolyard.

4. A college tutor meets a student who is later revealed as his long lost sister.

5. A boy’s father is not his biological father.

6. Everything that happens in a movie you just watched starts happening to you in real life.

7. The president’s secret book is missing.

8. A trap door to an underground library is hidden underneath the grocery store.

9. Two brothers find out their parents have been dead the whole time.

10. A top rated collegiate athlete goes missing before the finals.

11. You receive an email from a long list relative you thought was dead.

12. You see your missing sister at the mall, but she doesn’t recognize you.

13. A couple finds out they were never really married.
